What Role Do Older Friends and Relatives Play in Your Life

I have made a lot of friends who are older than me in my life, and I also like to talk with my older relatives. My older friends and relatives have played an important role in my life so far. They always give me suggestions when I meet obstacles. Besides, they are always happy to share their experience with me.

As for me, I can learn from them, such as how to prepare for an interview when I got my first job, how to overcome obstacles, and how to control my emotions. They not only give me ideas but also help in my whole life. Whether I am happy or unhappy, I always like to talk to them.

I like friends and relatives who are older than me. They help me when I am in need and give me a positive manner to live my life.

Spring Forward

Spring Forward is coming!! Have you heard that? "Daylight Saving Time". One of the biggest reasons American change their clocks to Daylight Saving Time (DST) is in order to save energy.
As I know,in the past, the Daylight Saving Time begins for most of the United States at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday of April. However, beginning in this year(2007), Daylight Saving Time begins at 2 a.m. on the Second Sunday in March. Hi,my friends, it's today !! Please don't forget to adjust your watch. :)

Week 7 in Semi-intensive English Class

Time flies so fast, now in the seventh week in this semester. We continue to study in grammar book – Adjective Clauses, and reading The Global Marketplace in our textbook. We also had another article from The World Is Flat. “The World Is Flat” , this book is first year book in school.
To be honesty, I did not have enough knowledge even sense in business field. All of the business terms for me are not easy to understand,such as tariff, central economic planning, and market capitalism. Maybe I need to transfer those terms into my native language; however, I didn’t. I tried to search them on WiKipedia for making sense.
We also have the oral presentation in this week. I thought that I mistook the question; therefore, I did not have a good presentation.
What happened to me!! I did not have any good score so far. It’s too bad !!

Reflection on This Week

Last week I got a cold and did not attend to the class on schedule. I felt not good not only from the physical but from my mind. Because I never got such a heavy cold since I have been here. I could not pay attention on my course and each assignment even I tried to do it. I thought that I got behind a lot in the class, and I needed to get ahead as soon as possible. I think it is important to do exercise in my free time and eat more fruit and vegetable. Of course, take a rest when I feel uncomfortable. People say that these are good ways to keep your health.
This week, we continue to study in gerunds and infinitives in English Grammar. There are a lot of rule I have to memorize. I did not do well in this section and it was let me feel very upset. I should study hard and keep practice in the textbook, I think.

ESOL Conversation Program With Me

ESOL Conversation Program is a program to help international students to improve their English speaking skills on campus. Last semester, I wanted to register this program; however, the schedule to me was conflict with my courses.

Fortunately, I have the spare time to register this program. I chose one group class and one speaking partner. In the group class, we have to choose a topic which we like to discuss before the class, and then we share the opinion and discuss the subject. The teacher is a volunteer to teach us and she tries to teach us how to use the English in everyday life.

Another class is one by one to practice my English skills. My speaking partner is an undergraduate student. He is a very nice person, he prepared the CNN’s new article to me and discussed with me. We also share our life experience to each other, especially; he shared his study experience in Japanese to me. It is a mirror to me to know how people to learn the second language. In order to help me to improve my English ability, he will plan to give me some article to read.

Reflect on What I Have Been Learning in Another Class This Week

“Children's Information Technology and Policy” is another class that I take in this semester. Because the professor went to the Israel, we had another speaker in the class in this week. We discussed on the mobile computing how to using in children library. As we know, there are more and more children use the technology, such as PDA, cell phone, and game in their everyday life. However, we still need to know the advantages and disadvantages of using technology in children library. Of course, the policy of children’s internet protection is also an important issue.

Happy Chinese New Year 2007

Today is Chinese New year’s eve, also named the Spring Festival. In our Chinese New Year’s Eve and the first day of New Year are celebrated as a time of getting altogether and thanksgiving. In this holidays (approximately for one week), we visit our relatives and friends. Besides, we have a big meal in the dinner and we will get the red envelope from our parent or elder who in our family.
There are some special evens, for example, the first day of the New Year we always visit our oldest relatives. Yet another example is the second day of the New Year, every daughter who has been married needs to visit their parents. I think it is a very special culture.
One way to name a Chinese year is by an animal. By this system, year names are re-cycled every 12 years, because there are 12 animal names, such as rat, ox and tiger are the first three. In this year, 2007 is year of pig. Happy Chinese New Year !!

Reflection on Something Happened in This Week

The weather changed to snow on Monday and our school reported that we would not have a class due to the inclement weather. It so luck to everyone who in love, because we got another vocation on Valentine Day.

However, I didn’t expect to have this free day, I could not discuss with my partners on our oral presentation. I tried to connect my partners via E-mail and phone and divided every section that who needs to report it. We chose and saw the video “Jane Goodall: A Life in the Wild” for the oral presentation. It is a challenge for me to make a speech in front of people. Even I did the research in our project; I was so nervous that forget what I want to say.

My Experience With Visiting the National Zoo

Last Saturday(020307), I went to the National Zoo with my family. The weather was sunny but a little bit freeze. This was my first time to visit the National Zoo and I was very excited. We visited the giant pandas, small mammals, of course, great apes and other primates. ( I studied the lecture about nonhuman primates last week) In the past, I only can get some information about primates in internet or animal planet. I would like to see them in person and observe their behavior.

What you’ve learned this week in this class

I have been this class for 2 weeks so far, and I must say that it is really different with former English class. I have to study more independent and spontaneous. Because we only have two hours per day in this class, we need to do exercise and ask teacher by ourselves after class. I have learned the grammar rules in nouns, pronouns and noun clauses. In addition, we practice listening, reading and composing an essay. We have a class blog and a class reading wiki. I also interested in post something in my blog and post my feedback after reading a story about Lance Armstrong.

Self - Introduction

My name is Jennifer Ho, and I come from Taiwan. I have been studying English at MEI since last semester. The major reason why I study here is that I would like to earn my master's degree in Library and Information Science at the University of Maryland.

For me, as an international student and non-native speaker of English, everything is a challenge. I have been lucky to meet good teachers and friends while studying here. Whatever the difficulties I face, they give me a lot of supports.

I hope that I can improve my language and writing skill in this class. It is very important to improve my English sufficiently for full-time academic study in the future.
